UNC Generative AI Committee Charter
Background:
The advent of tools such as ChatGPT and other generative AI has created challenges and opportunities for academia. To help schools and faculty adapt to these changes in the fall 2023 semester and beyond, the Provost has commissioned the UNC Generative AI Committee.
Charter:
The UNC Generative AI Committee is charged with developing guidelines* and resources faculty can use to:
- Ensure the ethical use of generative AI by students.
- Ensure the ethical use of generative AI by faculty in their teaching and pedagogy.
- Ensure the ethical use of generative AI by faculty in their scholarly research.
- Ensure the appropriate and ethical use of generative AI by staff in their administrative duties.
- Provide students with generative AI skills they will need in the future.
- Utilize generative AI to enhance faculty instruction.
*The committee’s charge does not include developing university-wide generative AI policies but serves to support each school develop its own policies appropriate to its unique circumstances.
Resource Deliverables:
- Guidelines faculty can use in their course syllabus to communicate appropriate and ethical student usage of generative AI in the classroom per item 1 above in the charter.
- Guidelines faculty can use in their teaching and pedagogy to ensure they are using it appropriately and ethically per item 2 in the charter.
- Guidelines faculty can use in their scholarly research to ensure they are using it appropriately and ethically per item 3 in the charter.
- Guidelines staff can use in their administrative duties to ensure they are using it appropriately and ethically per item 4 in the charter.
- Generative AI training sessions to assist faculty in preparing their fall semester courses to incorporate generative AI that meet the objectives in the charter above.
- A website with generative AI resources faculty can access to meet the objectives in the charter above. This website will include links to UNC faculty and staff who can assist faculty in adapting their courses for generative AI
- Other deliverables as appropriate to accomplish the committee charter.
